Dr. Henry Ukpeh is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Academy of Pediatrics, certified in Leadership and Finance, an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, and a Consulting Pediatrician. A dedicated member of the Canadian Pediatric Society, he has served on its Public Education and Self-Assessment Committees and is currently an Assistant Editor for Pediatric and Child Health, Canada’s leading pediatric journal. His work is widely published across electronic and print media.
Dr. Ukpeh is a lifelong student of nature and an avid astronomy enthusiast. He studies The Grail Message, engaging deeply with life’s fundamental questions. He is the author of Only Be Afraid of Standing Still - Practical Lessons from the Lives of Children. His next book, Nascent Wisdom, will be released in 2027. He is also passionate about using Artificial Intelligence to improve health outcomes and well-being across the African continent.

A Mission of Service
Dr. Ukpeh’s personal mission is to shield, protect, support and nurture vulnerable people toward strength and independence. That commitment led him to pediatrics, grounded in the belief that children are among the most vulnerable members of society, particularly in under-resourced communities.
The Road to Pediatrics
After undergraduate medical training in Nigeria, he completed a year of national service in a remote community in Northern Nigeria, running a regional hospital whose patients sometimes walked for hours to receive care. Seeing that children carried the greatest burden of illness and loss gave his career a clear direction.
Clinical Training
He trained in Pediatrics at McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, and qualified in 1993 as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Building Regional Child Health Services
From 1993 to 2014, Dr. Ukpeh developed and led pediatric services across the East and West Kootenays of British Columbia, including Trail, Nelson, Castlegar, Grand Forks, Cranbrook and Kimberley. The regional program served a population of approximately 85,000 and supported about 200 family physicians in an area that had struggled to attract pediatricians.
Teaching and Community Care
He founded a rural training program for postgraduate pediatric trainees and served as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics. He also founded and funded the Kootenay Friends for Children Foundation, which supported underprivileged children in the region. More recently, he has practised as a Community Consulting Pediatrician in Peterborough, Ontario.
Leadership and Finance
His executive education includes all five levels of the Canadian Medical Association’s Physician Management Institute, Stanford Graduate School of Business training in Change Leadership for Sustainability, and Accounting and Finance Fundamentals for non-financial executives at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
Professional Service and Publishing
An active member of the Canadian Paediatric Society, Dr. Ukpeh has served on its Public Education and Self-Assessment Committees and as a spokesperson. As an Assistant Editor of Paediatrics & Child Health, he reviews scholarly work for publication, including manuscripts concerning chronic kidney disease in children. His own work is widely published in electronic and print media.
Honours and Recognition
His academic distinctions include Nigerian Federal Government Merit Award Scholarships, recognition in a medical essay competition on blood transfusion services in Nigeria, and the Percy Williams Research Prize during postgraduate training. In 2005, the Canadian Paediatric Society awarded him its Certificate of Merit for outstanding contributions to the health and well-being of children and youth in his community. He was also nominated for the 2015 Royal College Prix d’Excellence Specialist of the Year Award for British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
Kidney Care and Health Services
Since 1997, Dr. Ukpeh has contributed to the planning, development and management of dialysis services in Jamaica, St. Lucia, Barbados and Puerto Rico. His work has extended from strategic decisions and clinic oversight to planning infusion centres and additional dialysis capacity, guided by the same concern for people whose health makes them especially vulnerable.
What Comes Next
Today, his interests include using Artificial Intelligence to improve health-care delivery and the social well-being of children in under-resourced communities, particularly across Africa. He continues to write, teach, mentor and explore how medicine, leadership and responsible innovation can create lasting change.
